REACH Edmonton

More than 330 people gathered to celebrate accomplishments from 2012 at REACH Edmonton’s Annual General Meeting and Showcase Celebration May 29. The well-attended event educated and engaged community members about REACH Edmonton’s work in the city and the root causes of violence and crime. Keynote speaker Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan spent the days preceding the event engaging with local politicians, police and community leaders in a series of special meetings and events. Carnochan, who co-founded the Violence Reduction Unit in Scotland’s police force, shared his insights on the causes of crime and how to address them. His speech shone a light on the importance of creating healthy, stable families. “If you don’t get rid of violence at home, you’ll never get rid of violence in society,” said Carnochan. “Children don’t learn to be violent, they learn not to be violent . . . it is essential that young children learn communication, compromise and resiliency skills.” The 2013 AGM & Showcase Celebration was the best attended year yet, and featured an area of partner displays to highlight REACH Edmonton’s connections in the community. “This was our best year yet,” said REACH Edmonton Executive Director Jan Fox. “I’m excited about building on this momentum through the rest of the year.” During the AGM, elections were held for new Board Members and Advisors.
