REACH Edmonton

REACH Edmonton’s sixth Annual General Meeting and Showcase Celebration will have a different focus this year, as REACH presents An Evening of Reconciliation: We Are All Called to Action, June 9 at Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre (11113 - 113 Street).

This year’s theme is reconciliation, building on the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Dr. Patti LaBoucane-Benson and Shelagh Rogers will present four TED Talk-style discussions on the TRC recommendations and how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in our daily lives.

“Reconciliation requires action,” said Jan Fox, executive director of REACH Edmonton. “Each of us has a role to play in our communities, workplaces and neighbourhoods in repairing the relationship between settlers and Indigenous peoples so we can move forward in building a safer city for everyone, together.”

Dr. Laboucane-Benson is a Metis woman living near Stony Plain and originally from St. Paul, Alberta. Her bestselling graphic novel The Outside Circle, was featured on the Globe and Mail’s Top 100 Books of 2015 list, as well as the CBC’s Best Books of 2015.

Dr. LaBoucane-Benson has worked with Native Counselling Services of Alberta for 21 years and is currently the Director of Research, Training and Communication.

Shelagh Rogers, O.C., is a veteran broadcaster-journalist. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada and is dedicating her life to working towards reconciliation.

She is an Honourary Witness for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, hosts The Next Chapter on CBC Radio One and is Chancellor of the University of Victoria.
